The Inspiration Journey

The inspiration ingredients for 'Light on Leaf'
Creativity is a seed that must be nurtured and guided into fruition. Despite the hokey and overused analogy, there's no better way to describe the process of giving life to something beautiful, interesting or simply fabulous than to think of planting a seed and helping it grow. It's not enough to simply notice that seed; we have to tend to it, be its gardener. How many times have you had an idea but then stuffed it deep beneath the monthly bills thinking that you couldn't possibly do anything with it? Take that fabulous ball of yarn gleaming at you from the 'Impossible Dreams' stash. You bought it because you loved it but now what?
Here comes an answer: the inspiration journal. With a few tools and an openess for inner adventure, you can find what you need to nurture and grow a nebulous, unformed, idea into a piece of beautiful art to wear, whether it be knitwear or jewelry or countless other things. In fact, inspiration or creativity journals are the pathways used by countless gardeners to dream something into existence. I use them for anything from designing knitwear to developing new color combinations for the yarnscapes I'll be selling on my upcoming website.
Above you'll find a photo of inspiration journaling in progress as I grow the elements for 'Light on Leaf' colorway. It began with a notion, an unformed idea, around which I dabbled a bit of paint, played with yarn, and honed in on the specifics thinking ochre, creamy yellows and soft, sun-dappled greens. Later, after I had worked the colors out more, I sent yarn samples to my pin maestro who created a Light on Leaf pin shown on the upper right hand corner.
Below, a piece of free-range knitting emerges in the yarnscape colorway shown against a photo I found particularly evocative.

LIGHT ON LEAF
Think you couldn't possibly do something similiar? Not so! This process works for anyone regardless of how inherantly creative you believe yourself to be. This July in Santa Fe, amid the yarn shops, bead boutiques, art galleries, International Folk festivals and such, Lenita and I will be guiding you through the inspiration journey. You will be amazed by what this technique can do for your gardener's soul.
