LIGHT AND VELVET

More Venetian beads nestle in my Fortuny silk
These days Venice fills my thoughts, visions of that magical city seeping into my memory like water through my mind's foundations (oh, ye who recognize a bungled metaphor when you see one realize that I must be CRACKED). I will always think of Venice in terms of glass, velvet and light. I couldn't get enough of the combination while slipping through the streets in search of treasures. History rises close to the surface in Venice, the centuries forming watermarks that rim the edges of crumbling palazzos. Even in the busiest tourist season, it's easy to turn a corner and find yourself alone in a deserted alley caught deep in time.
Under the light...
The photo above was taken just outside a perfect little yarn store. After completing my foraging, I turned left and found a little bridge flying over the canal under which a gondola slipped. A lovely convergence of light and luster touched the waterway as if the water was being lit from beneath. Though you can't see them in the picture, little fishlings were cavorting just below the waters surface.

A magic night
At night under the stars, Venice dances in reflective light. Here's a scene of a canal side cafe perfect for dining after a day of strolling the streets. And, for glass and bead lovers out there, Murano, the island of the glass maestros:

Murano floats
Venice is a sidebar excursion for Knitalyers this October. Four days in this wondrous city will take you glass, bead and yarn foraging, on historical tours and on a jaunt to Murano. Interested? Details here: http://www.janethornley.com/blog/index.php/site/Knitaly/
