For me, colour and texture rule and most of the inspiration feeding my imagination comes from the natural world. I see knitting as art, as viable as any other, and no matter what the tool or preferred palette, in human hands, magic happens.

Evoking the Rose….and Venice, while we’re at it…

Roses Remembered

In Nova Scotia we claim to have no spring, saying that winter simply melts right into summer, moving stealthily as if it has something to hide. One moment there's that freak snowfall in May and the next day summer comes in bringing warm weather and no risk of frost--suddenly, with no apparent transitions. So, even though the official start to spring is only days away, here we know its a long time yet before we'll be tossing off our jackets.

However, I did step out into the slightly warming sunshine today and happen to glance toward the corner of the house long enough to witness a flower, a yellow flower! Okay, so said yellow flower will be named a weed in months to come and be yanked out of the ground by it's head but today, right now, I so name it a flower! And it's yellow, did I mention that? Surely yellow is one of the universe's most obtimistic of hues?

Speaking of flowers, when in California a couple of weeks ago, I indulged my senses in every blooming, growing thing I spied becoming  positively giddy when seeing a flower of any description .But I had an acute longing for roses. In this I'm clearly not alone as the picture above testifies: in a little garden shop tucked away from the freeway, I strolled around the winter landscape until I found this little grouping: a memorial to roses. For thee we wait, it seems to say. And we do, we wait for roses.

And March the 12th is my birthday but I've reached the age when I celebrate my birthday minus the accompanying digits. We live in such an ageist society, one that generally only equates youth with value, so I'm going with substance. And experience.

Meanwhile, the Culture Fushion  knitalong has morphed into a joyful explosion of free expression in the Ravelry thread as incredible works of art evolve. Watch in each posting as I show various pieces as they grow. Everyone's having a great time and I am stunned and amazed by the results. Here's one example, Carla's Venice:
