TAOS AND SANTA FE, MAY 2010

Mabel Luhan Lodge Original Gates
SANTA FE/TAOS KNITTING EXCURSION May 8 - May 15, 2010

Me wearing the Road to Taos Wrap
Though I usually want to return to many of the places I visit, a few stand out as ones I crave repeat visits again and again. And again. One of these is the Santa Fe/ Taos region of New Mexico, the state so aptly known as the Land of Enchantment. A knitter's paradise, inspiration dances in the shop windows, across the painted canyons, in the spirit of its creative peoples, in the galleries, the vistas and, of course, in the yarn stores. Five stellar yarn stores exist in Santa Fe alone whereas Taos has three, including La Lana Yarns and Weaving Southwest. Here knitting is given the respect it deserves, even revered, plus the entire area is infused with a spiritual dimension you feel beyond words. So, can their be a better place for a knitting retreat?
This May, come join me for a week of inspired knitting, eating, yarn foraging, shopping and scenery in one of the continent's most amazing places. The excursion includes:
- 3 nights double occupancy accommodation in Santa Fe ( May 8th and, again on May 14th & 15th)
- 5 nights accommodation at the Mabel Luhan Lodge, Taos, an historic inn once owned by Mabel and Chief Tony Luhan who entertained Georgia O'Keefe, DH Lawrence, and other artistic luminaries there (so why not us?)
- All breakfasts, 5 lunches and 2 suppers
- Transportation from Santa Fe to Taos return
- Shuttle transportation to organized restaurant arrangements plus to museums & yarn stores
- Knitting workshops (our project will be a beaded wallhanging but participants are always free to choose another of my designs of their choice and I'll provide both pattern and support)
- Yarn forages to make your heart beat with joy
- The company of like-minded knitters who share your passions
All for the price of $2,600 (single supplement of $800 applies). Special rates for residents or those making other accommodation arrangements are available. Please contact me and we'll work something out.
The fees do not include:
- Transportation to Santa Fe (planes fly into Albuqurque and shuttles will deliver you right to the heart of town near our inn)
- Alcoholic beverages or meals not named
- Museum entrances

The ITINERARY
Though this may change slightly and there's a good possibility that a separate small workshop based in Santa Fe may yet be added to either the begining or the end of the trip (beading and embellishment, anyone?), the details are unfolding and will be priced separately. Meanwhile, what's on sure footing now is:

Tuto's Santa Fe
Santa Fe , May 8th. Day 1
We'll all be arriving on our own steam to meet at La Fonda Hotel, a historic inn and hotel right in the center of Santa Fe, a location perfect for walking, strolling, and shopping. Though the excursion officially begins today, you may want to book the night before to acclimatize to the altitude as well as the area. At 2:00 this day, we will set forth on a liesurely stroll around town, visiting favorite shops and galleries, and ending our day with supper together at the La Fonda and an early night.

Taos creations
Taos, May 9th. Day 2
Today we set off for Taos, a mere hour's drive and world away, straight into the mountains where we're booked at the Mabel Luhan Lodge. For more on this historic location, check out my description here: http://www.janethornley.com/blog/index.php/site/KnittersCorner/knitting_in_taos_part_1/ , arriving in time for a welcome lunch. After we settle into our rooms, we'll gather to discuss our projects, including color options and possibilities. Then, of course, we'll need to gather our raw material—yarn! To that end, we'll be walking (or being transported) down the road to La Lana yarns for the first of our serious yarn forages. That evening, we'll return for supper at the lodge.

The Color Purple, La Lana Style, Taos
Taos, May. 10th, Day 3
Evocative Knitting Workshop. Today, we'll be at the Lodge for a relaxing yet stimulating knitting retreat. After breakfast (all meals are delicious, creative, organic and fully yummy), we'll meet to begin, a session launched with pictorial stimulus to fire your creative jets. Then we begin free-range knitting our wall-hanging or project of choice. Our workshop will take place in a modern, light-filled, room with space to move, play and spread your yarn booty.
That night, we'll coordinate a supper at a restaurant including shuttle services (price of meal not included) at a restaurant/cafe. Or individuals may decide to stroll into town for other options.

The Landscape
Taos , May 11, Day 4
After breakfast, it's back to our creative knitting project which will take us up to a 1:00 lunch at the lodge. Lunch, by the way, is an event around here. The chef is more than a little famous for her innovative, organic, and always fresh style. You may become addicted and take away the cookbook.
The afternoon is earmarked for an excursion to the Milicent Rodgers Museum, a contemporary of Mabel's (who'll you'll get to know at the lodge) known for her magnificent traditional silver and jewelry collection, now housed at the musuem. As a woman of substance, vision, and more than a little gusto, she is known for doing the kind of thibgs every knitter understands: she'd dye her own stuff (in pots on Chief Tony's stove, another story). Any wealthy, cultured lady from the social register who dyes her own yarn is our kind of woman (as is most every other kind who'd do that).
Evening meal will be coordinated as per the prior evening.

The countryside
Taos, May 12, Day 5
You'll be inspired by now and already plotting new colors to add to your unfolding creation so after breakfast we'll gather for another knitting session to discuss possibilities for creative paths ahead. Naturally, we won't want to miss lunch so we'll re-fuel before heading back to town for Weaving Southwest's (right around the corner from LaLana's) hand-dyed wonders followed by relaxed shopping in town. Arrangements will be made to shuttle the foot-weary back to the lodge at an appointed time.
Evening meal will be coordinated as per prior evening.

Taos, May 13th, Day 6
Our last full day in Taos. No sobbing, please. Though the day will involve knitting, of course, we're busily making arrangements for another outing, a bit of a surprize. Bear with me here as we're waiting for details. You won't be disappointed, I promise. Lunch will take place at the lodge followed by another coordinated supper in Taos.

Knitting in Taos
Santa Fe, May 14th, Day 7.
After breakfast, we leave the lodge, heading back to Santa Fe with a stop at a bead store or two. Consider this priming the scene for the dangling embellishments to festoon your knitted wall-hangings. We'll be arriving in Santa Fe, booking into our hotel and then heading off to the local bead stores, for which this town is equally famous.
That night we'll take our farewell dinner (price not included) at one of the more famouse eateries in town. We deserve it (not that we've been underfed this trip).
* A possible special workshop may be offered separately at this point and details will follow. We're considering a beading your knitting workshop which will either finalize your wall-hanging or may entice you to bring a bevvy of other knitted beauties for embellishment. Stay tuned.
