For me, colour and texture rule and most of the inspiration feeding my imagination comes from the natural world. I see knitting as art, as viable as any other, and no matter what the tool or preferred palette, in human hands, magic happens.

 And, speaking of inspiration...

Inspiration: the colors of Morocco

Inspiration fuels me. The word keeps appearing in everything I write, something which apparently means this is a hotspot indicator for my existence. I read for inspiration, knit, bead and write because I am inspired. On bad days when I have to drag my feet out of bed, I am heartened in my belief that my eyes will find something marvelous just beyond my immediate world, something that will lead me forward up and over life's speedbumps.

Travel for me is inspiration. There isn't a place I've visited that hasn't touched off a creative vision. Sometimes a novel is born (seven exist and most of those were born from my travels), sometimes it's a pattern or ten (Knitaly, the Book), a piece of jewelry, knitwear or the simple urge to catch a certain play of light in a watercolor painting or  a piece of knitting. Once a friend and I journeyed to England in March and grew all weepy  (yes, pathetic) simply because the early spring light in the English countryside is just heart-breakingly beautiful...all buttery and luminescent like a sungilding on the back of a pond. Even today, twenty years later, the memory of that light still slips through my fingers in a skein of silken yarn or becomes tangled in my memory only to appear again somewhere in a design. It lives because I have. Even the simplest of experiences can be transformational.

Inspiration: creating in a Spanish countryhouse overlooking the sea...

So, I take travel seriously in a very heart-lifting and positive way. Though I've probably spent the combined mortage of a house in all the trips I've taken over my lifetime, I don't regret a single dollar. Enlarging my boundaries means I've lived bigger and wider so that I can measure my lifetime in a circumference of precious friends , both old and new, and in what I've gained from experiencing the world in context.

I've designed the six voyages planned this year around the concept of inspiration. I envision each excursion as a voyage to creativity centered in some of the world's most beautiful locations, settings fabulous enough to inspire knitting, painting, writing and a myriad of other forms of art. Morocco, Spain, England, Nova Scotia, Santa Fe and Italy for Knitaly08 -- how marvelous are these?  Need a little inspiration in your calendar? Check out these voyages to come on my new trip page here:
