For me, colour and texture rule and most of the inspiration feeding my imagination comes from the natural world. I see knitting as art, as viable as any other, and no matter what the tool or preferred palette, in human hands, magic happens.

 WORKSHOP SANTA FE

*

Santa Fe is one of my favorite places in the world. Rich with color and art, it's a virtual community of creativity with museums, art galleries, fabulous shops, historic and spiritual sites plus wonderful yarn and bead shops.  If that's not enough to entice you, the Santa Fe Bead Fest rolls into town every March, unfurling aisle after aisle of beads and arty bobbles. My friend, Ricki, a Santa Fe resident, and I will be holding a workshop in her home just prior to the Bead Fest. Why not join us?

The Workshops

My workshops are highly free-range. I strive to lead you beyond the grid in how you approach knitting while accommodating multiple projects. I'm more about how you knit than what you knit. See a design of mine you love but are afraid to launch? Come and I'll help you fly. Want to explore the approach in a general sense? Come and I'll introduce you to the spirit of free-range knitting with a simple project such as a new scarf/wrap design I'm preparing for March. Interested in the Story Coat, where you translate your life into stitches beginning with a sleeve? I'll be talking about the story coat, too. In other words, the workshop is about evocative, expressive knitting wherever you are.

There are so many inns, bed and breakfasts and hotels in Santa Fe, you'll have no trouble finding one to suit your price point. Try the La Fonda in the town center since its in walking distance everywhere. We'll be meeting there for supper the night before our workshop. Oh, yes, and their margaritas are excellent, by the way, as is the guacamole. For more suggestions on where to stay in Santa Fe, contact me at jane.thornley@gmail.com or Ricki at darbeer@yahoo.com.

Travel into Santa Fe is usually via Albuquerque where airport transfer services run from the airport to Santa Fe's hotels.

Our Itinerary:

March 13th, PM: Meet at the La Fonda Hotel restaurant for supper and to get acquainted with your knitting and beading cadre

March 14th:  9:00 am. Meet in La Fonda's lobby after breakfast and we'll walk to Oodle's yarn store for a pre-workshop yarn forage to stock up on yarn for our projects. Later that morning, everyone will make their way to Ricki's house (address and map will be sent to all registrants or you can follow us) to begin our knitting foray.

11:00 am meet at Ricki's house to begin workshop.

1:30  Lunch. Lunch will be served by our chef, John Thornley, imported all the way from Nova Scotia who will prepare light fare for your munching enjoyment.

2:30 Workshop resumes. Once we are launched on a various projects, we'll have a range of places to sit, knit and chat. Ricki's lovely home has seating in the solarium, the porch overlooking the pinon desert or in her cozy living room. So much of what we do is communal. We knit, sip coffee and chat in little gtatherings, all of which enhance thye Santa Fe experience.

5:00 We disband for supper in town. Most of us will eat together in one of the restaurants which we'll select together that afternoon . We have many favorites.

March 15th. 10:00 am, meet at Ricki's

Once we're fuelled by coffee or tea, we'll resume our workshop, check to see wherevery one is with their projects and spend the day in knitting, conversation and exploration. I'll be holding informal tips, tricks and technique sessions such as how to weave in ends or ways to creatively work shortrows throughout the day.

1:30 Lunch

4:30 Disband and reconnect in town for supper at 7:00.

March, 16th, 17th and 18th is the Bead Fest in downtown Santa Fe. On the morning of the 16th, I'll meet everyone at the BeadFest vendor hall to welcome you to serious bead shopping. I will be around during the morning if you'd like assistance but I suspect you'll be enthralled. Think foraging for beads for your project or even future projects.

March 17th. 1:30 pm. Afternoon only. Here, we return to Ricki's to share our treasures and to bead your knitted piece. Ricki will be working with part of the group on making shawl pins and I'll work with you on embelishing your knitting.

Recent Comments I am delighted to find that you also write. I've been following your knitting site and was so happy that your novel is about an angel in New Orleans, well, maybe not "about" an angel, but it's in the title, so... I've visited New Orleans several times (Just 3) visiting my brother when he lived there and we combed through the cemeteries. That's where I found the angel who was sobbing with her head covered in grief for the passing of her sister. It was so moving that I have the photo framed in our hall. She's beautiful. Couldn't wait to order your book! Thanks!
