WRAPPED IN ART

Wrapped in Art: Brass Night

This month the MarieJosette Gallery in Toronto's Distillery District is hosting 'WRAPPED IN ART', a month-long show and sale of wearable art. Artists from across Canada are particpating including weavers, shibori silk artists, felters and just about every kind of fiber maestrette working in beauties to wear. Marie and Josette are fiber artists themselves: Marie weaves wonders (and makes glorious yarns, too) and Josette creates gorgeous garments in stunning original designs. If you live in the Toronto area, try to get down to the Distillery and view the show.

Above and below are my three contributions (bet you'll recognize a few...)

The Kelpy Wrap

Yes, this is the very same wrap I'm featuring as a free pattern recipe. Come see the original up close if you can.

Four Winds Wrap

I know pattern designers are supposed to keep the originals of all their designs to use as examples for prospective knitters but I rarely do. It's against my free-range philosophy to encourage exact duplication. Hey, this is about following your creative spirit, too! Even my kits, thought they'll contain the same colors and most of the same yarns, will contain a few oddballs just to make the knitter's creation completely unique.

For more information on MarieJosette, check out their new website here http://yarnsplus.typepad.com/yarn_bits/ and here for more information on the gallery http://www.mariejosette.com/

KNITALY 08—Patricia, Jane and Fiesta Yarns: or, Architexture, Italian Style

KNITALY 08. Only days before the first inaugral Knitaly Adventure Knitting Excursion begins and plans are already underway for Knitaly 08. In fact, so much excitement surrounds next year's excursion that at times I had to simply supress myself for fear of bursting a seam (if you saw the strain my seams have been under over the past five years, you'd understand) but I can't wait a second longer. FOR KNITALY 08 I'M FORMING A DESIGNER DUO TO FURTHER ENHANCE OUR ADVENTURE KNITTING IN THE TUSCAN HILLS: PATRICIA WERNER AND I WILL BE TEAMING UP FOR KNITALY 08!

Patricia, who designs under the name of MAYA, is a multimedia artist known for her bold use of vibrant color and unique compositions that echo back to the ancient cultures and myths of the Mayans, Egyptians and Africans. And now the Tuscans! Originally trained and employed as an architectural designer and city planner, for more than 50 years, her unusual and energetic works have found expression in such diverse areas as architectural design, commercial photography, city planning, creative writing, Tiffany lamp creations, spinning, dyeing, knitting, crocheting and ethnic jewelry creations.

She has studied under some of Europe, Great Britain and America’s most renowned knitwear designers and is not only the celebrated author of Dazzling Knits (see above) but an energetic workshop leader constantly in demand. When we met, the creativity just crackled between us and then, later, I thought how much fun it would be to knit in Tuscany with such a dynamic spirit. Well, that's kind of how it's been happening with me these days: one moment I'm dreaming it and the next, I'm doing it.

Two designers, two styles, one project. Whereas Patricia designs intricate-looking modular creations and my designs tend to be looser and free-ranging, we have codesigned a fabulous project incorporating both styles: the Tuscan Architexture Vest, a gorgeous vest knit with a modular tile back (Patricia) and a free-range front (me). Pictures of the completed project will come soon along with FOUR COLOR choices, each selected to represent the soft, muted shades of the Tuscan countryside.  Each Knitaly participant chooses his or her kit according to color preference and size.

But that's not all. Guess who's providing the yarn? Fiesta! Yes, Jeannie, owner of Fiesta yarns, is not only coming as a Knitalyer to next October's event but her company is supplying the yarn. Fiesta supplies a multitude of yummy yarns for discerning knitters and will be dying a special colorway just for Knitaly available only to trip participants.  More about that in another post.

I simply must stop for now—I'm hyperventillating-- but stay tuned.  Much more on Knitay08 to follow.

From the entry 'Wild, Mysterious Australia'.
Jane, it's lovely to hear my everyday world described through the eyes of a newcomer....it makes me look at things afresh. Looking forward to meeting you in Sydney shortly.
