For me, colour and texture rule and most of the inspiration feeding my imagination comes from the natural world. I see knitting as art, as viable as any other, and no matter what the tool or preferred palette, in human hands, magic happens.

Vests for a Turkish Bazaar

vest vest vest

"Three vests, one inspiration: the endlessly fascinating country of Turkey with 30 pages in all. The Topaki vest, inspied by the tiles in the Tokapi palace's famed tiles, is a loose easy fit of all over lace panels with a textured yoke. Fastened by three buttons on the yoke, the vest has straight seams and a drop-shouldered sleeve perfect for donning over sweaters. Skill level: medium.

"Arasta is named after the outdoor market in Istanbul where rugs and fabulous Turkish treasures are sold . Slightly fitted, this beauty features an all over lace pattern reminiscent of Turkish Textiles with textured borders like Turkish carpets. The side is expandable to fit most sizes.

Cappadocia is a bolero-style vest with a lovely lace panel in the back, shaped sides, and a front knit side-to-side in a soft rib to elongate the torso.

All designs work up on needle sizes raging from 5.5 (9 US to6.6 (US10.5) and love a mix of worsted-weight yarns."

SeaGlass Vest

vest vest

Sea glass is a discovery, a little wave-smoothed found object, a sea gem resembling anything from aquamarine to peridot. Just like sea glass, this little vest is loose and easy, worn open but for a single button.

The knitting is equally relaxed. As a free-range project, this style gently guides while encouraging random acts of creativity along the way. No mistakes exist here. Even the lace segments refuse to take themselves too seriously. You will be encouraged to make little riffs of feather & fan here, garter stitch there, and unfold a lovely, loosely-shaped fabric which is surprisingly flattering.

Riverstone Vest

vest vest

Born of rock and moss, twig and leaf, the inspiration behind this vest is organic and elemental. The stones around my house, heaved up by glaciers in primordial times and texturized by nature over the eons, influenced the hues blended together in this tunic-length vest. When I wear it, I imagine I've donned a sheath of lichen like some (large) forest nymph.

Knit from carry-along yarns -- those skinny, nebulous yarns like ladders or railroads designed to be held together with sturdier fare -- and size 9mm/US13 needles, this will knit up quickly yet remain whisper-light despite the length. I used primarily Habu yarns but any light-weight yarn will do.

Wear it belted or loose. Knit it long as in the original or make a shorter version. Eliminate the gently rounded shirt-like tails or experiment by making one in lace-weight linen or some textured filament yarn. As a free-range knitting pattern, this design just begs to be tried in different ways.

Come Spring Vest

vest vest

Spring opens up with a flourish of joyful greenery. Celebrate with this little vest worked side to side in a mix of lace ribbing and seed stitch featuring alternating colors of green braced by brown worked on size 5mm/8US needles. The bottom edging is picked up and knit afterwards in a leaf stem lace pattern. It’s an easy wear suitable for dressing up or down and those roomy armholes and absence of buttons offer an added dash of chic comfort. The back features a center panel in seed stitch worked in a glorious hand-dyed ribbon.

The vest can be knit in two ways: modular style by knitting lacey strips singularly or in groupings sewn together or, for those deep into sewing avoidance, by knitting side-to-side in either one or three pieces: back and two fronts.

Sunset Bolero Vest

Versatile, flattering and cross-seasonal, this little vest will take you countless places in comfort and style. Wear it over a shirt with jeans for a casual look, over a tank for summer, or with a blouse or turtleneck for fall into winter. Designed to be worn open, it can be knit to hit just above the waist or slightly below and features a chic bolero’s pointed back, which can be eliminated, if desired. The edges are trimmed with a band of thin tape yarn that creates the look of piping when the vest is sewn together. A light pressing alone creates the open v-neck effect.

Choose from a selection of tapes, ribbons, silks or cottons plus a few 'special effect' yarns or head for your stash for the necessary elements to knit up this little garment.

Road to Indigo Vest

Like all dream voyages, this traveler’s vest is designed for comfort and leisure with side gussets and the possibility to expand or shrink its size by simply removing or changing the gusset as preference or girth require. It is sized to be roomy but, if your body expands or shrinks, so can your vest. The vest is knit with two yarns at a time alternating in standard knit2 purl2 rib, mixing yarns in the alternating rib. The right side purl ribs are knit with hand-dyed variegated Blue Heron yarn as the ‘lead’ yarn while the knit ribs are worked in multiple yarns that are changed every 4 or five rows. Pattern is 11 pages long, contains color photos, schematics and instructions for both the vest and the beaded embellishments. Sizes: standard 32-40 in chest plus possibility to extend to 40+ through the use of gussets
