We don’t know what we want to be when we grow up…

We don't know what we want to be when we grow up…

I often launch projects without any clear idea of where I'm going—true free-ranging. Inspiration may range from a photo or a notion or even a yarn. Sometimes I use mood boards and sometimes I don't. If there's one thing you can consistently say about me it's that I'm inconsistent. I like to keep my options open, to change my mind.

But I rarely make swatches. My version of a swatch is a piece of the garment I'm making even if I'm not entirely certain what it is I'm acually making. Everything as to count for something. No fiddly swatches for me. Back in my multi-color intarsia pictorial days, sleeves were my swatches. If I liked the way the sleeve turned out, I'd knit the rest of the sweater. If I didn't…well, let's just say I have plenty of orphan sleeves hanging around, a whole knitted ARMy.

Now, my Ravelry knitalong companion piece began as a rectangle which I thought might be….well, I didn't know but I liked the rectangle so I made another one. And then I thought I might try knitting a third to link the other two together (back) and that morphed into a short-rowed back yoke. Bascally, I let the design knit itself intuitively.

Finally, I know what this wants to be, I just don't know how to classify it (old librarian tendencies here). Is it a cape, a poncho (no—opens in front), a wrap or a ruana? I even tried making fused names like 'wrapuana' but everything sounded too much like a rare lizard species. Finally, it occurred to me that it doesn't matter what it's called. It simply is what it wants to be…

What's the flip side of KNIT? (4 character(s) required) Answer:

Jane, have a naming contest. It might be fun to see what everyone comes up with. Prize not needed, just a something fun. This is such an eclectic group, I bet you'd get a lot of laughs from it. Melba

After seeing your ravelry post with the shell pattern (and all the horrid comments) I started to look at your profile and web site etc. I find your philosophy inspiring, just the road I would like to travel along in my knitting journey. I would like to add that in my mind if a project evolves as organically as yours do then unless it speaks a name it would be hard to give it a title. However I do see that things sometimes need labels, references etc....

Lol! When I was five years old, I wanted to work with black panthers and tigers! I'm inconsistant too, but always following my life road...I do the same with sweaters; a general idea, a lot of improvisation!

Recent Comments love it. Another stunner. I can think of many dragon color ranges from my boys pokemon card collecting days! Blues eyes White Dragon was everyone's favorite.
