Sieze the Day
BUTTERFLY BLUE mixed media necklace
Some days I just seize. My body, my mind, my imagination all stiffening, refusing to open to ideas, bending or relaxing. That's when I know it's time for either a message or an energetic kick-start, often both.
That's where I've been with jewellry-making this winter. It took someone saying to me not long ago: 'Jane, make something BLUE! Everything you've made lately is green, green or bronze.' I looked around, seeing nothing blue, red, pink…only the organic imaginings of fern and leaf. Same old same old. Time for a jolt. So, off I ventured to BeadFest Santa Fe where a cornucopia of jewellry and bead artists create wonderous elements for the creative imagination. I swam in color and light emerging with hand-blown glass beads, beads made of silk brimming with texture, bronze, copper and silver, raku discs, stones swirling with colors of the ocean depths, Roman glass…...ah.
Brass butterfly aflight over abalone
So, I guess you know what I've been up to since I came home. Above you see two pieces, one in porcelain and one in brass, featuring a couple of favorite free-flyers. Each carry crystals, glass and other wonders along their length with hand-dyed silk ribbon ties. See them in the special April Spring jewellry newsletter (just sign up for my regular one and you'll receive yours). And, have no fear, glorious yarn is on its way, too.
